In what seemed like a good idea at the time, Spain’s national basketball team did a promotional photo shoot in an effort to show that they were “one with the Chinese.” Unfortunately, the Chinese (and the rest of the world, for that matter) saw things a tad differently
This quote from the Raptors’ Jose Calderon speaks volumes as to just how much of a clue the Spaniards have when it comes to cultural gestures:
“We felt it was something appropriate, and that it would be interpreted as an affectionate gesture,” Calderon, who plays for NBA’s Toronto Raptors, wrote on his ElMundo.es blog. “Without a doubt, some … press didn’t see it that way.”
More like, EVERYBODY ELSE doesn’t see it your way Jose. While no doubt, a lot of us non-Asian Americans can admit to having done the “slant eyes” gesture as a joke amongst our group of friends, we’re not naive as to realize it’s anything other than a mockery of Asian people and is certainly not going to be seen as a cute gesture of sorts…Enjoy the backlash, gentlemen.
