Folks, meet the latest “impact recruit” for Penn State basketball: Chris Babb. A 6’4″ shooting guard straight outta Texas with incredible shooting range…Just reading the description about this kid suddenly has me thinking about Pete Lisicky all over again. It almost has me forgetting about yesterday’s heartbreaker of a loss against the Fighting Chief Illiniweks.
The Penn State Nittany Lions went out of the region to nab one of the best shooters on board. Arlington (Tex.) Oak Ridge senior shooter Chris Babb is the guy Ed DeChellis nabbed.
“He just committed to Penn State,” Mike Babb said. “It got down to Penn State and Iowa. He made the call today to both coaches.”
As a senior, Babb strived to get better. As a result, he turned in a monster season. For starters he averaged 31.6 points per game. He made 270 free throws, a school record. The capper came in the point column where he scored a school-record 1,100 points.”
The decision for Babb took a long time. The process played out over a couple of months.
“I shrunk it down to Penn State and Iowa about a week ago,” Chris Babb said. “I went about a week just going back and forth. I was thinking about it and I couldn’t think of just one thing it was more like a gut feeling like I should go to Penn State.”
As the season rolled on the best shooters still on the board were Babb and Scottie Haralson. The latter popped for Connecticut and now Babb is Big Ten-bound.

I know it sounds crazy to say this a day after another Big Ten Tourney first-round exit coupled with another sub-.500 season but…I’m excited for next year already. With a solid group of 7 guys coming back (Battle, Pringle, Morrissey, Cornley, Jackson, Brooks, and Jones), adding an impact guy like Babb helps immensely as he can give a boost to the backcourt scoring and more importantly, being a tall guard himself, he should help us out with our perimeter-defense.
We now have one scholarship remaining and the consensus on the PennStateHoops.com forum seems to be that we need one more impact guy to really go “Over The Top.” Preferably a big man with some serious shot-blocking ability, as we haven’t had one of those types since Calvin Booth graduated.
Speaking of Calvin Booth…Apparently he’s still lingering around the NBA with the Washington Wizards and has developed a nice three-point stroke.
