Blue-White Roundtable: Boiler Up!

Alex Grier has this week’s questions for me to unofficially answer.

Run Up The Score

1. After being embarrassed by Ohio State at home, where does Penn State’s program as a whole go from here?

We’ll win at least two of our last three (only possible loss I see is to Michigan State on the road, but they’re in the midst of the annual “Sparty Collapse”) if not run the table these last three games.

2. Following back to back poor performances, what do you see as Penn State’s biggest problem on defense?

The entire secondary, particularly Justin King. What has happened to this kid? He was a stud last year in his first full year at CB and was looking alright until the Buffalo game and it’s been all downhill from there. Too often he gets beat by his receiver or he fails to make a tackle after the catch, leading to even more yards after the catch for the receiver. It’s like the “Space Jam” aliens secretly landed in State College and sucked all the talent out of him and the rest of our secondary.

Any chance these little critters have been seen around Happy Valley lately?

Tom Bradley’s gameplan was also a big issue as well, once again he played conservative have his corners stay about 8 yards away from the line of scrimmage, giving OSU’s receivers plenty of room to make a catch and pick up some decent yardage afterwards. It also doesn’t help when you don’t blitz Connor and Lee on a regular basis to try and throw off Todd Boeckman, he seemed to have enough time on every passing attempt to search for ManBearPig before getting rid of the ball to a wide-open receiver.

So bottom line, the secondary needs to re-discover itself…fast. And Bradley needs to come up with a more aggressive defensive scheme for the rest of the year.

3. What happens against Purdue this Saturday?

Purdue will get its share of yardage through its aerial attack, but that’ll be it. Their running game is very pedestrian compared to ours, we should have little trouble containing them there. The Boilermakers’ defense isn’t particularly strong either, especially against the run. Not to mention the fact that it is senior day and despite the fact we’ve been lacking leadership from the seniors, I feel the team will re-group and come out rejuvenated enough to send them out with a victory.

Lightning Round:

What bowl game does Penn State end up in?

Alamo or Outback. It all depends on how the MSU game goes.

Who is going to be Penn State’s next verbal commitment?

Yikes, I haven’t even paid attention to recruiting. I guess it’s because I don’t expect us to recruit well after the way JoePa and his incompetent coaching staff have managed to waste some kickass 2005 and 2006 recruiting classes. I guess I’m going to go along with the rest of the crowd and say Mark Wedderburn.

Purdue score prediction.

I really think Black Shoe Diaries and Run Up The Score are overreacting, Purdue is a middle of the road Big Ten team like us, and we’ve done very well at home against these types of teams the last couple years. Did I mention they haven’t beaten anybody of significance either? Don’t look for that trend to change this Saturday: Penn State 34, Purdue 17.

  1. L B says:

nice space jam throw back, i really enjoyed that!
also did you hear they guys aren’t cleaning the stadium any more? how do you feel about that— no one is happy in the the valley about the decision.
also…you had to have heard about the moron frat guys and the youtube video right? if not check up on it in the collegian. dumbasses that’s all i can say.

  2. No worries, I am very much aware of the whole stadium cleanup thing, I just didn’t feel it would be that compelling of a story to write about.

Plus, you’d have to be living under a rock to not know about the whole YouTube fiasco involving the frat guys. However, the other PSU blogs already have that situation well covered, not to mention the fact they have a little more free time than I likely do.
